15,000 Foot Jump Description

California's Highest Skydive

A 15,000-foot first skydive is a jump from a much higher altitude than a standard California skydive. While it’s not the World’s Highest Jump, Skydive Monterey Bay’s 15,000-foot jump provides 1 ½ to 2 times more freefall than almost all of the skydiving centers in the world!

This skydive is completed as a tandem jump, meaning that you’ll be attached to a professional, highly experienced, and trained, certified and endorsed by a National Parachuting Governing Association. You’ll be trained, under the direct guidance, and attached during exit, freefall, and parachute descent, to your tandem skydive instructor.

At 15,000 feet 2.8 miles or 4.5 kilometers) above the ground, you and your tandem instructor will take position in the door, and just a few seconds later launch out of our Super King Air 200 aircraft. The next 60-70 seconds will be the most electrifying, beautiful, sensory stimulating experience of your life. Weightlessness, zero gravity, pure freedom combined with blissful, feel-good neurochemicals pumping throughout the body make your first skydive one of the most incredible life experiences.

Your tandem instructor will open the parachute at a safe altitude that provides time to explore the second phase of your jump: parachute flight. Everything about the parachute flight is a difference experience than freefall. Your body position orientation, and all of the sensations: visual, sounds, resistance, and intensity of the experience all change. If the parachute is flown aggressively, it can provide sensations like a roller coaster or it can be a relaxing descent soaking up the incredible Monterey Bay ocean views.

Even the highest of skydives over Monterey will leave you wanting a little more. Therefore, we always encourage people to upgrade to our World’s Highest Tandem Skydive.

Jump Selection Considerations

Not sure which ocean view, high altitude Monterey skydive is for you?
Several reasons to consider choosing our 15,000 or 18,000 foot skydive option.

Size Does Matter

Simply because (freefall) size matters. You didn’t save the money, overcome the fear, get the day off, to do a standard altitude skydive! You wouldn’t plan to climb Mt Everest only to arrive at Base Camp satisfied. You’re checking out high altitude skydives because you’re not a “Base Camp is cool for me” kind of person.

There is a 100% correlation to the altitude that you jump from to the amount of freefall you’ll experience. Skydiving, even from a high altitude, is an extremely high intense but short duration activity. There is only so much time to relax and embrace the experience, soak up the sensations, and take in the incredible ocean views.

The peak moment of nervousness is the first few seconds. Exiting, or jumping from a perfectly good airplane is often the biggest challenge and perhaps the most anxious moment for most first-time skydivers. It’s not uncommon for first-time jumpers to experience some sensory overload and nervousness during the first few seconds of the jump. As you adapt to the stimuli, you become more relaxed, widen your perspective, sharpen sensory receptors, and ultimately, increase your stoke levels and soak up incredible ocean views of Monterey Bay.

For high arousal and intense activities that are short duration, increasing the length of activity time is the best way to get the most out of the experience. Therefore, you’ll absolutely be stoked you decided to do a high altitude skydive.

Award Winning Views

Often voted as one of the most beautiful places in America, you’ll get the unique opportunity to see it as only a few others have: a true bird’s eye view of Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, and Pebble Beach. We are only skydiving center that jumps over Monterey.

Skydive Monterey Bay’s high jump altitudes provide an opportunity to see as far north as San Francisco on clear days while jumping closer to the beach than any other California skydive center.

Sometimes during the climb to jump altitude or during parachute descent we spot whales migrating along the Monterey Bay. You won’t get closer beach jumps, Monterey ocean views, and potentially spot whales migrating at any other skydiving center in California.

High Value & Budget Friendly

Our 15,000 foot skydive is the best price high altitude skydive in California and is about the same cost as other skydiving center’s standard jump altitude.

Our hot take is that if budget constraints require you to choose between an 18,000 foot skydive or a 15,000-foot jump with video and pictures, choose the latter.

You will still be jumping from an altitude higher than Mt Whitney and almost every other skydive center in California, plus you’ll still have the opportunity to get video and pictures of your skydiving experience. Our proximity to the ocean provides a surreal backdrop of Monterey Bay that provides the most amazing video and pictures.

You can always come back for that extra bit of freefall on a second jump, but you can never go back and capture all of the first skydive energy and stoke.

Ear Sensitivity

You may also be inclined to opt for our 15,000 foot skydive if you want to do a high altitude skydive over Monterey, but you have particularly sensitive ears.

Ear pressure and sensitivity vary by individual. If you regularly experience ear discomfort while flying or driving at elevation, speak with a medical professional before booking and consider whether the 15,000-foot option may be more appropriate for you.

California Coastal High Altitude 15,000 Foot Tandem Skydive FAQ

Is skydiving from 15,000 feet scarier than a more standard/lower altitude?

This is a common misconception. It is not scarier to jump from 15,000 feet than at a lower altitude such as 13,000 feet or 8,000 feet above the ground. This is because it is not really possible to visually distinguish changes in altitude while in freefall. So, whether you exit the airplane at 10,000, 13,000, or 15,000 feet above the ground, you won’t be able to visually distinguish the difference.

This is also why freefall sensations are described as floating and not falling. Some skydive centers that are not able to fly to high altitudes might promote the lower jumps as a “ground rush” skydive for the extra adrenaline junkie, or even as a “parachute flight” skydive . But skydiving, surprisingly, doesn’t provide the visual sensation of “ground rush”.  It’s extremely difficult for humans to detect depth of field beyond a distance of a few thousand feet. Since all tandem skydives require parachute opening at 5000 feet above the ground, you’ll already be flying under a parachute at a much slower speed once you’re able to detect depth of field.
