A 10,000-foot first skydive offers everything you’d expect: jumping from a perfectly good airplane, freefall, parachute flight, and all the incredible, rollercoaster ride of emotions that come with a first skydive experience. But as high-altitude specialists offering a top-rated first skydive experience, we want you to know it is a no frills, basic introduction to skydiving. We offer this jump option because we want everyone, regardless of their budget, to have the opportunity to do their first skydive over an incredibly beautiful location.
While our 10,000 foot jump may be our lowest altitude option, it’s by no means lacking in excitement or adventure. Rest assured, your dopamine levels will be spiking once you exit the aircraft and your bliss levels off the charts by the time you begin your parachute descent near the towering Monterey dunes.
Our 10,000 foot jump still provides incredible ocean view skydiving over Monterey Bay, but it will most likely not be all that the experience could be. If you’re budget sensitive but want to jump at the best place to skydive in California for views, then this could be the option for you.
However, we do highly recommend doing one of the high altitude jump options. Skydiving is such a high intensity, short duration activity that enjoyment levels are directly correlated to time in the activity. Experiencing so many new sensory inputs while loading up the body with neurochemicals and emotions can lead to momentary sensory overload and anxiousness. One of the fantastic aspects of a high altitude skydive is the duration is long enough to be exposed to, and adapt, to these new sensations, emotions and neurochemicals. Therefore, you have an opportunity to get accustomed to freefall sensations during your first jump.
Your first skydive is a once in a lifetime experience. Let’s just put this way: we’ve never, ever had someone tell us post-jump that they regretted dedicating a few extra bucks for a higher jump nor did it impact their futures. But hey, we’re rockstar skydivers not financial planners so you do what works best for you.
Like all first skydives at Skydive Monterey Bay, our 10,000 foot skydive is a tandem skydive, connected to a professional, highly experienced, and trained, certified and endorsed by a National Parachuting Governing Association. After gear up, you’ll receive a short skydive briefing that covers all your participation requirements during each stage of the jump.
During your ride to jump altitude, your instructor will begin making final adjustments on your gear and review the skydive procedures once more. At 10,000 feet (1.9 miles or 3.0 kilometers) above the ground, you will exit our Super King Air 200, attached to your tandem instructor.
For 25-35 seconds, you will experience all that sensations freefall has to offer: zero gravity, freedom, weightlessness and euphoria. Regardless of jump altitude, tandem skydivers open their parachutes at the same safe altitude to allow for wind adjustments, some fun parachute flight, scenery observation, and enough time and altitude to fly a safe pattern back to the landing area. After about 3-4 minutes of parachute flight, you’ll be making your landing at the landing area.

Not sure which Monterey ocean view skydive is best for you? Here’s several reasons to choose our 10,000 foot jump, and a few to consider upgrading to our 15,000 foot skydive or 18,000 foot skydive options.
Our 10,000 foot skydive is our budget friendly, no frills ocean view California skydive.
If this is the absolute limit on dollar expenditure for your skydive, well then, you’re going do your first jump in paradise and that’s better than most other skydives in California.
That being said, we highly recommend that you try the 15,000 jump to maximize this once in a lifetime experience. You only live once. At least that’s what we tell our chequing account.
If you have extreme ear sensitivity, you might want to consider our 10,000 foot skydive.
In our entire history that spans more than three decades, we are not aware of anyone experiencing anything more than temporary and minor sensations in their ears from skydiving. However, if you regularly experience ear discomfort from flying or driving in high elevation, it might be a prudent approach to try the 10,000 foot skydive first.
For more information read, How Skydiving can Affect the Ears.
Often voted as one of the most beautiful places in America, you’ll get the unique opportunity to see it as only a few others have: a true bird’s eye view of Carmel, Big Sur, Santa Cruz, and Pebble Beach. We are only skydiving center that jumps over Monterey.
Doing a low altitude jump (i.e. 10,000 feet) might not afford you the ability to take in more distant scenery such as San Francisco, but you’ll still be jumping closer to the beach than any other California skydive center so you’ll have fantastic Monterey Bay ocean views.
Sometimes during the climb to jump altitude or during parachute descent we spot whales migrating along the Monterey Bay. You won’t get closer beach jumps, Monterey ocean views, and potentially spot whales migrating at any other skydiving center in California.
Sometimes size does matter, and in the case of freefall, it certainly does. You didn’t save the money, overcome the fear, get the day off, to do a low altitude skydive! You wouldn’t plan to climb Mt Everest only to arrive at Base Camp satisfied. You’ve likely heard of Skydive Monterey Bay because of our high altitude skydives, and that’s likely why you’re here. Your so close to the preverbal summit of skydiving, so don’t stop at 10,000 feet!
There is a direct correlation to the altitude that you jump from to the amount of freefall you’ll experience. The higher the jump altitude the longer the freefall. Skydiving, even from a high altitude, is an extremely high intense but short duration activity. There is only so much time to relax and embrace the experience, soak up the sensations, and take in the incredible ocean views. Low altitude skydives, relatively speaking, are over quite fast and often limit you from fully experiencing all that a magical skydiving experience has to offer.
The peak moment of nervousness is the first few seconds. Exiting, or jumping from a perfectly good airplane is often the biggest challenge and perhaps the most anxious moment for most first-time skydivers. It’s not uncommon for first-time jumpers to experience some sensory overload and nervousness during the first few seconds of the jump. As you adapt to the stimuli, you become more relaxed, widen your perspective, sharpen sensory receptors, and ultimately, increase your stoke levels and soak up incredible ocean views of Monterey Bay. But with a low altitude skydive, by the time you reach that comfort level, the freefall may be over, or almost over.
For high arousal and intense activities that are short duration, increasing the length of activity time is the best way to get the most out of the experience. Therefore, you’ll absolutely be stoked you decided to do a high altitude skydive.
The idea that a lower altitude skydive might be less scary or safer is not an uncommonly held belief by first time skydivers. Since fear is an individual and internal emotion, we can’t determine if that moves your fear needle in any direction.
However, we can tell you that from a factual basis there is absolutely no reason to be more nervous or scared about a higher altitude jump. Skydivers accelerate to their maximum speed within 15 seconds of exiting the aircraft and stay at that speed, or their “terminal velocity”, until they deploy their parachute. All tandem skydives, regardless of their jump altitude, open their parachutes by 5000 feet above the ground. Given that parameter, even jumping from 10,000 feet provides about 30 seconds of freefall. So regardless of jump altitude, you will reach terminal velocity prior to parachute deployment.
In fact, we often refer to the old pilot adage that, “altitude is your friend.” If something unusual happens during freefall, your instructor has more time to rectify the unusual situation prior to parachute deployment time.
Since all tandem skydives require parachute deployment at about 5000 feet above the ground the altitude at which you exit the airplane dictates how much freefall you experience.
A 10,000 foot skydive is a very thin slice of freefall, providing you with just a taste of a glorious and amazing experience. It can vary somewhat due to mass, body shapes, and environmental factors, but generally a 10,000 foot skydive equates to 25-30 seconds of freefall.
A World’s Highest 18,000-foot skydive, on the other hand, triples your amount of freefall time with up to 90 seconds of freefall. A 15,000 foot skydive equates to about 65-70 seconds of freefall.
All tandem skydivers must:
Be 18 years or older to skydive.
Be in reasonable physical condition.
Be advised that weight restrictions apply to those weighing more than 200 LBs. Please call us.
Our operation is built around providing the world’s highest first jumps so we strongly recommend that jumpers upgrade to a 15,000 foot skydive or 18,000 foot skydive. We only offer a 10,000 foot jump option because we believe that everyone should get to experience their first skydive over a gorgeous setting. Since it’s outside of our normal operations there are additional limitations specifically for the 10,000 foot skydive, including:
